We hit the 30-mile mark and it started to sprinkle, then we saw lightning and heard thunder...about 2 seconds after the lightning. To us that meant we were in the middle of a thunderstorm and were basically lightning rods.
We had to ride 6 miles back to the car, but we couldn't finish the 44 miles we planned to ride.
The lesson in this is that if one is scared to get hit by lightning, adrenaline kicks in and riding really fast is no problem. I guess that means I could do that in the actual race too.
Here's a pictures of me after we made it back to the car. You can't tell very well, but I was soaked and so was Rick. He was busy putting the bikes in the car so he couldn't pose for the picture.
