We are very thankful because this year we have a trainer working with a group of us participating in the half ironman triathlon in August. She is donating her time to train us because we are participating as a fundraiser for Special Olympics.
She is an amazing triathlete herself, so it's an honor that she's donating her time and expertise.
We had our first meeting a couple weeks ago and she suggested we all look at our schedules and pick the amount of time we want to train for the season. After picking the total time such as
350 hours - 550 hours a season, her training plan tells us how many hours we need to train per week and then per day. In addition, while training we have a target heartrate to maintain so we do not undertrain or overtrain. I think this way of training is better for us middle aged folks.
R's feeling really good about his training so far. He is so much farther along than he was last year at this time. Me....well, I still don't know if I'm even doing the half ironman at all, so I guess I'm training as if I will do it, but not being really strict quite yet. I'll make a decision later. Even if I end up NOT doing the half ironman (which I still think is pretty crazy), I will be in good enough shape to do a sprint distance triathlon and a duathlon for sure.
So far, R and I have both realized that our heartrates have not been high enough while we are on the indoor spinner so we have to push ourselves a little more -and- it's been too high when we run outside so we have to hold back a little.
This was R before embarking on his 1 hour 45 minute run for that particular day. He ended up running about 9 miles. Thankfully it was sunny so he could run outside instead of on a treadmill.
Oh, and he's going that way..........
